Moneeza is the owner and creator of Lotus Blu Book Art. In this episode, Joy talks to Moneeza about the inspiration behind her process. They explore the handpicked artifacts Moneeza uses to create these artisan journals, scrapbooks and notebooks. Moneeza’s process draws from sources of inspiration such as her dual heritage and her global travels, which have taken her everywhere from Nepal to Italy. Her life experience and open mind have shaped the unique sensitivity embodied in her approach to bookmaking. She is passionate about creating pieces unique to each potential owner. She loves working with her hands: creating each piece is a spiritual process of awareness. She employs elements of history, color, and nature in each meticulously crafted creation. Episode 7 with Paige Held

Paige Held is the founder and co-owner of Yoga Joint. She has been teaching yoga for 24 years, embarking on her yoga journey at the young age of 16 in South Florida. Ten years into her teaching career, Paige created “Hot Fusion Flow,” her own unique and innovative style of yoga alongside her best friend, Kelly Green. This style of yoga blends and gains inspiration from various styles of yoga such as Bikram, Ashtanga, Power Yoga, Anusara, and Shiva Rea. In 2010 she opened her first of many studios.

Craving something more to add to her studios, she created “Fusion FIIT 45”. This class maintains mindfulness and the allowance of modifications for all bodies. Yet, it works to completely transform the muscular system with light to medium impact training, along with weights and resistance equipment to amplify the physical experience. After creating and developing these classes, she created her final piece to the brand Yoga Joint, which is the “Fusion Restore”. Paige’s belief system is that if you completely immerse yourself in our classes at Yoga Joint or their online classes, you will be your best self mentally, physically, and spiritually. Yoga Joint is truly a one-stop-shop for your entire body!

She draws much of her inspiration as a yoga teacher from her most important role as a mother to her two children and two bonus children. Her classes are physically challenging and mentally enlightening with the goal of enabling real people to better manage real-life situations. Episode 6 with Joseph Illidge

Joseph Illidge’s career in comic books as a groundbreaking editor, writer, mentor, and long-time industry advocate for inclusion and diversity spans almost thirty years. Starting at Milestone Media, Inc. the company behind the innovative superhero universe shown in the award-winning animated series, “Static Shock”, Joseph worked as a Batman editor at DC Comics and shepherded stories with iconic diverse characters ranging from the wheelchair-user Oracle to Cassandra Cain, the first Batgirl of color.

In recent years, Joseph was the Senior Editor at Lion Forge, Executive Editor at Valiant, and Editorial Director for A Wave Blue World, and has worked with organizations ranging from the National Down Syndrome Society to the Harlem School of the Arts. Joseph is now the Executive Editor for Heavy Metal, working with creators from around the globe. His graphic novel, MPLS Sound, about a fictional Eighties Minneapolis funk group competing to become the next band for legendary musician Prince, is available in bookstores. Joseph’s latest book, Access Guide to the Black Comic Book Community, showcases Black creators, conventions, store owners, and various publishers, and can be found in comic book shops.

 

Episode 5 with Michaela Carter 

Michaela Carter is a writer, painter, and an award-winning poet. She studied theater at UCLA and holds an MFA in creative writing from Warren Wilson College. Her novel Further Out Than You Thought was an Indie Next List Pick, and she was the Arizona Republic Critic’s Pick for Best Debut Author in 2014. Her poetry won the Poetry Society of America Los Angeles New Poets Contest, has been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and has appeared in numerous anthologies and journals. She is the cofounder of the independent bookstore the Peregrine Book Company in Prescott, Arizona, where she lives with her husband and two dogs. Her novel Leonora In the Morning Light is one of O, the Oprah Magazine’s “Most Anticipated Historical Novels That Will Sweep You Away” and LitHub’s “Most Anticipated Books of 2021.”

Tara has spent more than twenty years in the food publishing industry creating recipes, articles, and food styling for various magazines, books, television and advertising.
She has been the food and entertaining director of Ladies Home Journal magazine and  a food editor at Martha Stewart Living, Kids, and Weddings magazines. She has appeared on the Martha Stewart television show, The Today Show, and on The Food Network as a show judge and contestant.

Tara has created thousands of original recipes that inspire people to spend more time in the kitchen and enjoy food with friends and family. Tara is the author of Live Life Deliciously: Recipes for Busy Weeknights and Leisurely Weekends, her debut cookbook, and creates delicious recipes and beautiful food styling for magazines, books, television and food brands.

Episode 2 with Leo Castañeda

Leo Castañeda (b. Cali, Colombia 1988) is an artist and game designer living in Miami, FL. Fusing gaming, painting, virtual reality, drawing, and sculpture, Castañeda's work reimagines the racial, socio-economic, and posthuman anatomies that govern mythologies and societal systems across our globalized world. For ten years Leo has been developing the “Levels/&Bosses” series using the structures of gaming to create artworks and narrative through feedback loops of analog and digital. Interrogating modes of interaction and power structures, the work now culminates in an interactive video game and transmedia sci-fi experience.

Castañeda received his BFA from Cooper Union in 2010 and MFA from Hunter College in 2014. Residencies include SOMA Mexico City attended through the Cisneros Foundation (2014); "Of Games III" at Khoj International Artists Association in New Delhi India (2015); Bronx Museum AIM Program (2017), and Oolite Arts Studio Residency (2018–2019). He is a recipient of South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual/Media Artists Fellowship, Locust Project Wavemaker Grant, and Oolite Arts Ellies Creator Award.

Exhibitions and screenings span Bronx Museum of the Arts (2017), Bass Museum (2020), Espacio Art Nexus (2017), Frost Art Museum (2012), Wolfsonian Museum (2019), Children’s Museum of Manhattan (2019), IndieGrits Festival (2017) and more. Castañeda’s work has been featured in Killscreen, Rhizome, El Nuevo Herald, El Pais, and Vice.

Episode 1 with Gabriel Saientz

Gabriel is the Winner of the $100K Regis & Kelly Theme Song Search. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he started studying music at just 6 years old and started working professionally as a pianist/keyboardist at the age of 14. In 1995 he was awarded a music scholarship to expand his music studies at Miami-Dade Community College. Two years later, he won first place in a composition contest and received an Outstanding Music Student Award in 1998. A year later, he received another music scholarship at the University of Miami where he graduated with a Bachelors in Studio Music and Jazz Performance. 

He has performed around the world and recorded with well-renowned artists like Chayanne, Cee-Lo Green, Bobby Caldwell, La India, Luis Enrique, Marc Anthony, and many others. As a composer, Gabriel has songs in many TV Shows and has also written and produced several music scores in TV commercials for Tide, Ford, Pringles, Verizon, Visa, AT&T, HSBC, HBO, Clorox, Best Buy, AOL, K-Mart, VW and many more.
